Trailer Guard: 6 Key Trailer Cleaning Reminders

Torque Group • August 27, 2021

Keeping your trailer in excellent condition is essential if you want it to have a long life. This is why Powersports F&I products like Trailer Guard , which protects your trailer from deterioration, exist.

Ensuring your trailer stays clean is also a crucial aspect of trailer maintenance. Washing your trailer isn’t as simple as hosing it down, however. To keep yourself safe and prevent damage to your trailer, it’s important to keep the following pointers in mind:

1.Clean your trailer regularly

Clean your trailer after each use. Certain types of dirt can harden over time; if not removed immediately, it can turn into a resilient crust that’s corrosive to your trailer’s materials.

2. Disconnect your trailer from the power supply

Before cleaning the trailer, make sure you disconnect it from any power sources. This is to prevent accidental electrocution.

3. Observe safety guidelines

If your cleaning tool is a high-pressure washer, ensure you read and follow its instructions before use. Don’t spray any one spot on the trailer for too long as this could lead to damage. Also, observe proper distancing to avoid injury.

4. Use clean water

Dirty water may contain particles that can wear down your trailer’s materials, so make sure to use cold, clean water during your cleaning sessions. This is especially true for brand new trailers.

5. Use a damp cloth on specific parts

The following parts may be damaged if sprayed with water:

  • Electric systems
  • Hydraulic system
  • Tires
  • Ball couplings
  • Shock absorbers
  • Gas struts
  • Seals
  • Signage

Wipe these parts down with a damp cloth, instead.

6. Pay attention to your trailer’s materials

Your trailer’s various surfaces are made from different materials. To prevent damage, special care should be given to how each material is cleaned. For example, rubber parts are best treated with a silicone spray, petroleum jelly, or talcum. Wooden surfaces should be cleaned with water, then thoroughly dried after washing. Read your trailer’s instructions to determine the best way to treat each surface.

Trailer Guard

While you can do the cleaning yourself, other trailer maintenance procedures are best left to the professionals. This is where Trailer Guard comes in.

Trailer Guard offers protection against issues related to the wheels, tires, brake system, and more. It also comes with perks such as 24-hour roadside assistance should you experience problems during transit.

Trailer Guard provides coverage for up to 5 years for trailers with 2 axles or less. For more information on Trailer Guard and other Powersports F&I products, kindly visit our products page.
